Oh, Yeah: That's a Great Idea...

...NOT.

Apparently the Emperor and his minions are getting bored with Iraq, Iran, and North Korea, so they have gone looking for other problems to solve. First, of course, they have to cause the problems, so this might take a few months, but they seem to be off to a good start. From the UK Independent:

A new high-level report due for publication later this week urges the United States government to begin preparations to intervene in Cuba in the event [of] President Fidel Castro's death. The goal is to help spawn a speedy transition on the island towards "democracy and political freedom".

The recommendations, which include the creation of an $80m (£43m) fund to promote democracy in Cuba, are contained in the latest report compiled by the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba, created by President George Bush three years ago. The group is co-chaired by the US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, and by the US Commerce Secretary, Carlos Gutierrez, a Cuban-American.

...The president of the Cuban parliament, Ricardo Alarcon, condemned the report over the weekend, describing its publication as an act of war. "What's most important is that they admit to a secret plan to overthrow another government," Mr Alarcon told reporters. "What on earth could the secret part say when the public part violates all kinds of international law?"
[Emphasis added]

The "secret part" alluded to by Mr. Alarcon is the classified appendix to the report (which is to be released on Wednesday) that presumably contains specific measures available to the US at Mr. Castro's death. Although that section of the report will not be provided to us, even the most dull-witted amongst us can guess what and who those measures will involve.

I have wondered for some time when the current regime would start looking over Latin America, what with the sudden blossoming of populist successes. I guess the days of benign neglect are over.
