Low Tech/High Tech Innovations

California prides itself on its spirit of innovation, and not just in Silicon Valley issues. The latest noteworthy effort was put on display at the Cal-EPA office building in Sacramento, and it provoked quite a celebration. From today's Sacramento Bee we learn what exactly caused the celebration.

...the installation of the building's 55th waterless urinal. As you doubtless know, waterless urinals require little or no maintenance, operate by gravity and are cleaned with hydrogen peroxide.

Agency spokeswoman BreAnda Northcutt explains that there's very little odor, since there's no smell-causing bacteria that are created by the urine and water mixing. The building's management expects to save a million gallons of water every year, plus the energy saved from having to pump all that water around the 25-floor, 8-year-old building. There are also plans to retrofit the sit facilities with low-flow units, so women in the building can do their part.

Or as one building worker put it, "We're so environmental, we even pee green."

Makes me proud, it does.
