Betraying Public Interest Every Way They Can

This crew of GoPerverts has made one thing perfectly clear, to paraphrase their idol, Richard Nixon. It will sacrifice even glaringly necessary protections of the public interest to make a political talking point before the recess. The top politicians are just as adamant about that.

On spending matters, the Democrats and Bush appeared to get nowhere in their breakfast meeting.

Bush has threatened vetoes or signaled veto threats against most of the 12 annual spending bills for the budget year beginning Oct. 1. The differences between Bush and Congress involve $23 billion in funding — a gap that the Democrats call small, and the White House portrays as wasteful.

Pelosi said the president was firm on his stand, but she added, "I'm not one to take no for an answer."

The House GOP leader, Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, said there were no signs of compromise.

"It's clear that as we get into the fall, we're going to have a big problem," Boehner said.

Meanwhile, the confirmation of Bush's nominee to run the White House budget office, former GOP Rep. Jim Nussle, remains in limbo.

Reid said he did not expect the Senate Budget Committee, led by Sen. Kent Conrad, to vote on Nussle's nomination before Congress recesses for the summer later this month.

Reid denied that the Nussle's confirmation was being held up as a means to win White House concessions on other matters. He said some senators consider too Nussle partisan for the job. "We were very clear with the president: There is no guarantee he will get confirmed," Reid said.

Republicans blasted Democrats for delaying. Rob Portman, the current budget director, is leaving shortly.

The same group that for the past six years has blithely spent billions on its programs and war, now is trying to shade itself as 'fiscally responsible'. Of course, anyone who's seen the figures of our debt would be insane to let it talk up that line. But it's happening. Just as in the beginning of the Iraq war, the media just reported what it knew not to be true, there is no notice outside the blogs of the difference between the White House talking points and the basic truths about what they are, and what they have done.

The responsible members of the House had to hold their tempers yesterday and the fratboys from the right made the House look like the Texas legislature. Sorry if you missed the spectacle. The gang of rightwingers lounged back in their seats and laughed while one of their number after another simply rambled on about unrelated expenses (particularly CHIPS. Next, when the Chair sustained a Point of Order that the House's time was allotted for discussion of the amendment of the moment, went right back to the harangue. Their disregard for the public interest was total. The Dems were wise enough not to point out that the past six years of Republican control were the reason for the economic disarray. That would have established GoPervert claims on the use of time for nonrelevant issues.

While it wrangles away on the House floor by presenting frivolous amendments that were debated by using up four hours - well, you can see why this was totally ignored in the morning news. I gnash my teeth in irritation, and the media yawns. Then the Dems are called obstructionist - because they didn't lie down and let themselves and American interests be walked over. The right wing is doing everything it can to counteract the vote that brought public interest back into the business of the Congress. It isn't getting significant mention from the press. It's a coup that's too boring for them.

Keep plugging, your representatives are fighting a lonely and exhausting battle for your interests.

You're too kind to the Republicans. Not only did they spend billions on wasteful wars and corruption, but they LOST billions of dollars as well -- money that just disappeared and nobody seems to know what happened to it, and none of the Republicans in power seems to care all that much about billions of dollars missing.

If we had real media, paying attention to the real news, the amazing disappearing money would be an outrage that would piss off all Americans, regardless of party (you could frame it as easily as I can: "What could you do with $19 billion dollars? What could this country do with $19 billion? What could we be doing with that money if it hadn't been thrown away and lost in Iraq while we needed it for all kinds of things here in America!"). As it is, most people don't seem to have a clue about it.

Nora, I like to think of it not so much as being kind, as it being impossible for words to describe the depths of GoPervert corruption, evil, greed and disgusting lies.
