Thursday Birdblogging

An interesting bird that I spotted in the Rocky Mountain National Park is pictured here, the White Capped Sparrow. It's not remarkable in any other way but its distinct head markings make me wonder how that got through the evolutionary process. Some remarks I've heard as to most predators being basically color blind seem like myth, but maybe in this case it's to the point. Otherwise these birds would stand out pretty strangely.

From one point of view (at http://www.serengeti.org/nightlife_zebra.html), There must be something about the stripes, whether they reflect light differently in the longer wavelengths, which are sensed by our eyes at night, or the pattern confuses our eyes in the dim light.

This picture is from http://www.pbase.com/picchick/animals in British Columbia. There are other great pictures there, too.
