Thursday Birdblogging

Thanks to Mr. V for VA (Paul Rebmann) for the incredible pic. Visit his site for many more and as wonderful examples of his excellent photography.

From Paul:

This pair of bald eagles were enjoying this year's drawdown of water levels on the reservoir behind the Rodman Dam on the Ocklawaha River in Florida. The lake level is lowered to kill off the invasive hydrilla that thrives in the stagnant waters of this obsolete remnant of the Cross Florida Barge Canal. The canal to provide a shortcut from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico was repeatedly proposed throughout early Florida history, with an attempt as a public works project during the great depression, abandoned during WWII, and revised in the 1960's before construction was halted by President Nixon "to prevent potentially serious environmental damages". The path of the canal is now the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway, named for the activist who was instrumental in halting the project. Since then, Florida environmentalists have been fighting to get the Rodman Dam and the manatee killing Buckman Locks removed and restore this section of the Ocklawaha River to its historic scenic beauty.
