Enough, God Damn It!
I've mentioned before how much I respect the attorneys who are representing the Guantanamo Bay detainees under impossible circumstances. People like H. Candace Gorman reflect what I believe to be the real American spirit.
Ronni Bennett has the story of another American patriot, one who refused to be silent when she believed speaking out was called for:
In 2005, Veterans Administration nurse, Laura Berg, sent a letter to a local Albuquerque weekly, The Alibi, criticizing the bungled rescue operations following Hurricane Katrina and the Iraq War. Soon, her office computer was seized, her boss reported her action to the FBI and the VA began an investigation into possible charges of sedition against Ms. Berg. All for nothing more than writing a letter to the editor critical of the federal government. [Emphasis added]
Fortunately, with a little pressure from the ACLU and Sen. Jeff Bingaman, the investigation was dropped. The fact that Ms. Berg found herself in hot water for exercising her First Amendment rights shows just how sensitive the current administration is. The fact that the current administration backed off once a little pressure was applied shows just how cowardly the current administration actually is.
My point is that we don't all have to go to Gitmo to try to turn our country around. There's plenty that we can do, things as simple as writing a letter to the editor. If you're sick and tired of all this dangerous nonsense, then do something about it. If you need some ideas on just what you can do, I'd recommend visiting Code Pink or Pax Americana.
And then do something.
