Thursday Bird Blogging

Cedar Waxwing

(Photograph by Cliff Buxton and published at his web site.)

The cedar waxwing, or "cherry bird," was one of my favorites as a child. We always had several hanging out in our Wisconsin backyard, primarily be cause we had a huge cherry tree.

Here's the skinny on this wonderful bird from Nature of New England:

Habitat:

Open woodlands, forest edges, streamsides, orchards, old fields, farmlands, residential areas. Berry bushes or fruit trees are a habitat requirement.

Diet:

Many different wild fruits and berries, including cherries, juniper fruit, dogwood fruit, blackberries, viburnum fruit. Insects such as cankerworms, caterpillars, beetles, and ants. Tree sap and some flower petals.
