Help Needed
I find myself in deep financial trouble. My hours have been cut once again, which means I'm done, ruined, forked, at least for the short term while I try to find another source of income. It appears, given the current job market and my age, that the other source will have to be early Social Security.
I thought, even before my job situation became more tenuous, things were going to be tight, so I cut back my expenses to the bone. I've even canceled my health insurance, praying that I wouldn't have any untoward accident or condition arise that would cost me more than $1,400 a month (my premium). So far I've been lucky in that respect, and I qualify for Medicare on August 1.
The short term, however, is disastrous. Last night I received my 3-day notice from the landlord. I will be out of cash and homeless very shortly if I don't come up with enough cash to show my landlord that I'm not a total flake. I need to raise $2,000 by Monday/Tuesday.

I understand you are an attorney but Landlord/Tenant law may still be unknown to you. Am I to understand you have received a Three day notice?
This is upsetting, but not yet a cause for concern. I do not know the situation where you live but contact your landlord and/or management company immediately. Try to make some arrangements with respect to paying the back rent. Evictions can be costly, (and you have not been evicted yet, as no Unlawful Detainer has been filed). Good tenants are difficult to find and your landlord may be willing to work with you. Here's a link you may find useful. And I'm sure your Atriot friends will rise to the task. Contact your landlord, tell him or her you are raising the funds. They'd rather that than proceed with a UD, I'm wagering. You are still perhaps a month or so away from the filing of a UD, and after that it does go quickly. It is a summary process.

I seem to recall that PayPal will (or at least once did) temporarily 'lock' an account, if a contribution above such an amount is deposited - the incident, IIRC, involved a contribution from an atriot to Jeffraham a couple years ago or so, which froze JP's access to his own Paypal account temporarily.
Do you know anything about that, as in whether it is true, and if so, what the dollar level is that triggers that Paypal response?

Luck has very little to do with placing one's self in a situation of not having to live on the edge.
Hard work, common sense, not living beyond one's means and planning for the future, to include personal constraint in spending, lead to what you would refer to luck.
Granted, there are some people who just are in social-economic situations who will never get out of them, and that is why we pay taxes to help them.
Has this person with the J.D. gone to social services to get assistance? They are there to help and have many of programs to assist in rent and food assistance.
People often say that until they find, after living responsible lives, that they're in a very different situation largely out of their control: through extended job loss, their or a loved one's sickness, other tragedies or traumas. Then they know, if they didn't already, that sometimes life pulls the rug out from under people very often through no fault of their own. And they learn what empathy means, too late.
Does this person have a car, any art, books, appliances that they can sell to make ends meet?
Can this person down size to a smaller rental to make ends meet?
I really don't mind helping. I just want to know that this person is not taking the money we donate to pay off a flat screen TV, like those people after Katrina.
