What's Really Important
Congress reconvenes after the summer recess today and tomorrow. The agenda, which is set by the Republican majority, is a pretty good indication of what is going on in Washington these days. From the NY Times:
As they prepare for a critical pre-election legislative stretch, Congressional Republican leaders have all but abandoned a broad overhaul of immigration laws and instead will concentrate on national security issues they believe play to their political strength.
...A final decision on what do about immigration policy awaits a meeting this week of senior Republicans. But key lawmakers and aides who set the Congressional agenda say they now believe it would be politically risky to try to advance an immigration measure that would showcase party divisions and need to be completed in the 19 days Congress is scheduled to meet before breaking for the election. [Emphasis added]
Immigration reform has been a dramatic issue for the GOP ever since the outrageous "gonna build us a wall" bill was passed by the House last December. The Emperor has made it one of his main priorities, and he has urged Congress to do something about it. Republican congress critters even put on a series of dog and pony show hearings on immigration across the country during the summer recess. Now it's crunch time and suddenly the issue isn't quite so important, at least not as important as confirming Mr. Bolton to his UN post.
And another thing: Congress is going to meet just 19 days before the election break. The election is eight weeks away, which for the rest of the country's workers means 40 working days. Congress is only working half-time for their six-figure income? Nice job if you can get it, I guess.
And politicians feign surprise at the growing cynicism of the American electorate.

Hi Diane,
It looks to be a brief congressional
session, but watch for some last minute
monkey business with this gang.
A little pork, some special deals, and
last minute postering will be expected.
What is going to be the divisive issue
pushed this quarter for gop talking points?
PghPa
god forbid they actually do something for the good of the country.
