That voting business.

Today, when the voting public one at a time has put down their review of the job their government has done, and their wish for the future, is not a good time for the public servants who weren't serving the public. [But real estate agents in the D.C. area are mighty happy today.]

Having long, long ago and far, far way, worked with one campaign that wouldn't mix with the people but instead hired a media consultant to research the territory, to find a position and sell it - while I tried to get the candidate out into neighborhoods, talking to people and attending the county fairs, the church socials, the bake sales and fire department fundraisers - I kind of understand what happens to the candidates who think you buy votes, that they are a commodity. It keeps you from ever seeing your constituents as the people you are supposed to serve, and I had to leave that campaign. It was about buying votes, not winning them. That's where this White House is coming from. Again, it is simply wrong. On the war, on the economy, on the world, on the environment, on moral behavior and on the election, wrong again.

From CNN's poll up Tuesday at 3:21 CT;
Have you voted, or will you vote today?

Yes 86% 103266 votes

No 14% 17119 votes
Total: 120385 votes

That's a really good figure. Of course, readers of news sites are more likely to feel an affinity with government, more likely to feel confident enough of their judgment to vote in elections. And anyone who hasn't informed himself, probably would do us all a favor by not trying to vote without knowledge.

On the local level, here, I worked for a bright, public spirited, progressive and well-informed candidate, and I hoped to see him win the Congressional seat. He was running against a recidivist, Abramoff-compromised, opponent of all regulation over corporate farming, war advocate not taking the responsibility of performing oversight.

I feared that the relatively lower class, uninformed constituency that keeps this kind of non-representative in office, would rule the day, but at least we have worked hard and brought Rep. Ralph Hall's numbers down to 48% as of last week. Dr. Glenn Melancon had come up to 41% as his message gets out. It would be great to have celebrated last night, it would have been a spectacular victory for the public. But we can start from a platform of getting this high, and work our way up to real success next time, in two years.

Want to know how nice it is that even though he keeps his seat, our Grand Old Prevaricator party member will not be in the majority? Having switched from the Democratic party, which he always betrayed by his votes, the old reprobate will have to watch from the cheap seats.

I wished better for him, an honorable retirement. But for all of us, I look forward to a return of responsible government to the nation's capitol.

For Missouri, my daughter's family, the greatest has happened. Especially for eight-year-old Timothy with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, it is great that research will go on toward a cure. For my son in Virginia, a new government would be a terrific boost to the educated and the caring - a rebirth of civilization in the 'cradle of presidents'.

For all of those whose lives have been sacrificed for the political gains of the war criminals in high places, I promise to honor your memory by working toward instituting legal barriers to ever letting this happen again.

And dedicate, this verse from Alfred, Lord Tennyson's October 25, 1854 Charge of the Light Brigade ;

''Forward, the Light Brigade!'
Was there a man dismay'd ?
Not tho' the soldier knew
Some one had blunder'd:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do & die,
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
