Under The Radar
California has another election coming up on June 3, one that has primarily local import, so the turnout probably won't come near to matching the turnout we had for the Democratic Presidential Primary. That's a shame, because some local offices are up for grabs, and it's possible some horrendous results are in the offing, according to an editorial in today's Los Angeles Times. You see, California is one of those states that elects its judges, and one candidate for a Superior Court position in Los Angeles just might squeak in under the radar.
...Los Angeles voters, if they don't pay attention, could hand judicial robes to a racial separatist who called for restricting U.S. citizenship to persons "of the European race" and deporting blacks, Asians, Latinos and others who don't meet his racial criteria.
The candidate is Bill Johnson. Under the name James O. Pace, he wrote the racial exclusion as a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution and a 1985 book supporting it. Under the name Daniel Johnson, he ran a losing race for Congress in Wyoming in 1989 with a Ku Klux Klan organizer as his campaign manager. As William Johnson, he ran a losing race for Congress in Arizona in 2006. He now may have found a race he can win, unless voters here find out who he is.
It's bad enough Mr. Johnson is an opportunistic carpet bagger who travels around the West looking for an election to commandeer, but what is truly outrageous is the fact that he is a blatant racist who hides behind multiple names to avoid the consequences of his odious and unAmerican views.
The sad part is that in this election he just might succeed. Apparently he has the backing of the Ron Paul people (Mr. Johnson claims he has now adopted Paul's views on race) and the Pauliacs are working hard for him. Those supporters will turn out to vote for him. The trick is going to be getting the part of the population that really cares about real justice in the court room and that rejects the racist nonsense of Mr. Johnson and his ilk to turn out to vote in what too often is seen as a "ho-hum" off-season election.
This time the Los Angeles Times has done its job well in informing its readers of the danger ahead. More like this, please.
