Thursday Birdblogging
/Prothonotary Warbler at Judson Nature Trails, April 2002. Photo by Curt Harwerth
Very lovely bird to have such a gobswap of a name. I actually have seen one on a birding trip in Hagerman Wildlife Refuge.
Cool Facts
* The Prothonotary Warbler is one of only two warbler species that breed in holes. (Lucy's Warbler is the other.)
* The name "Prothonotary" refers to clerks in the Roman Catholic church, whose robes were bright yellow.

I believe it's also the only bird that is able to verify the identities of other birds. Sometimes called upon to authenticate documents by the lawyerbird.

Love the pics, Cos. Was there really an ability to verify i.d.'s on other birds, and how? Or just a seque?
