Hope For SMU
The battle is still on for the soul of SMU. A success has been achieved at the conference I posted about Tuesday.
The faculty, alumni, students and administrators at SMU who have been working to keep from being associated with war criminals have received a big boost from the Methodist Church. It will be a blow to those who are looking forward to cushy jobs with the Liebury and its "Think Tank". We will look for the struggle that will ensue to keep the University on the side of decency.
It won't be easy to override the ensconced powers looking to get their hands on the money the war criminals have amassed, but these good sorts of people keep trying. Any support we can give is appreciated.

[ImpeachforPeace.org received the following press release today from Rev. Andrew J, Weaver, Ph.D., who has been spearheading the efforts to prevent the George W. Bush presidential library to be located on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.
Indeed, in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."]:
News Flash: SMU Bush Presidential Library Rejection, passed 844-20
This rejection passed on Wednesday morning, 30-April-08, at the quadrennial General Conference of the United Methodist Church that is still meeting in Fort Worth, Texas.
This body is the highest authority of the denomination and cannot be over-ruled by any other body within the denomination.

"They're going to be forced to allow a vote here,'' says the Rev. Andrew Weaver, a Methodist, research psychologist and anti-war activist who is among the opponents of the library. "There will be a real vote here.''
It's not so much the library, as the research institute attached to it, that opponents are protesting. They warn that the think tank, to be dedicated to the study of the policies of the 43rd president, will besmirch the reputation of an independent university.
