Oh, Please

I am always amazed at how low the small-government, anti-regulation folks will stoop to pass their agenda. Today, however, I was shocked to discover that their latest target is the Humane Society. Yes, that's right: the Humane Society, that organization which looks out for abused animals and tries to put a stop to such things as organized dog fighting and the unnecessarily brutal treatment of agricorps' farm animals.

A group has targeted the Humane Society with ads claiming that the organization doesn't fund local shelters, something which the ad claims the organization implies in its literature.

From an editorial in the Los Angeles Times:

One of the current ads features a photo of dogs looking wide-eyed in shock under the caption "SURPRISED to hear the Humane Society of the United States shares only 1 percent of your donations with local pet shelters?" The ad goes on to state that the Humane Society "is NOT your local animal shelter."

The ad is true on both counts. But it's also misleading. The Humane Society has never claimed that its mission is to fund local animal shelters. Among the projects it does fund are legislative campaigns to pass animal protection laws in various states, investigations into animal cruelty (including dogfighting, puppy mills and factory farms), three wildlife rehabilitation centers and two horse sanctuaries, emergency shelter operations in areas hit by disasters and veterinary services in rural areas. In some communities it also has supported low-cost spay and neuter facilities. While some people may mistakenly believe that the Humane Society of the United States does the same job local humane societies do, it should not surprise anyone who has looked at the organization's website that only a small percentage of its money goes to local shelters.

So, who's behind these ads and what's their real gripe?

HumaneWatch.org is a project of the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom, a feisty and unapologetic warrior against what it sees as over-regulation of consumers' habits. In the decade and a half since the organization was founded by Rick Berman — who also runs a for-profit communications company — it has criticized health advocates for calling obesity an epidemic and has gone after Mothers Against Drunk Driving for its support of "needlessly" low drunk-driving thresholds.

Somebody needs to get a life.

This is "Popeye".
We found him in Sept. 08 near our home in Hampton, and have been caring for him since then.
He's a very sweet, people oriented cat who loves other cats and children, but is fearful of dogs. He loves to play, be held, be scratched, be groomed, and be loved on.
He is approximately 12 mos. old and weighs 8lb.
He is already neutered and has a wonderful, loving temperament. He received his annual Rabies & FVRCP-C vaccines, and was tested negative for FeLV/FIV, on 10/26/08.
He received his monthly dose of Frontline Plus flea/tick preventative and de-worm preventative. He prefers to be outdoors because he is afraid of our house dogs. But he never wanders far from his foster family. He's very kind and cuddly, and comes when you call him.
Popeye would make a perfect pet for a family with/without other cats, and maybe with one quiet calm dog, or with/without kids. He could be a very loyal indoor/outdoor pet or a perfect mouser in a private family barn. There is an adoption application/contract & a small re-homing fee of $50 required, which includes his collar/rabies tag, all of his vet records, a first right of refusal, some cat food, a litter pan/litter, a cardboard cat scratchpad toy, and his cat carrier. Please consider opening your hearts and home to Popeye, the perfect family pet!

This is Barndog's Frankie.

Here is some information I think is worth reviewing:

How can I
tell if the Rescuer or Breeder is reputable?

Rescuers and breeders are human beings so you will find that there are good folk and bad doing both. There are reputable breeders and there are some folk who breed cats but do not value ethical considerations or breed with the ultimate aim of improving the breed. Similarly, there are some Rescues that become "collectors", placing few cats, and others which have poor conditions or misrepresent the cats they offer for sale.

The reputable rescuer is willing to talk to the prospective buyer and a share information about the cat’s history, if available, about any personality quirks or special care needs, and about cat care and maintenance, both before and after placement.

In the same vein, the reputable breeder is willing to take the time to talk with the prospective purchaser and share information about the breed, cat care and maintenance, both before and after the purchase.

The reputable breeder or rescuer will interview the prospective in depth to determine the kind of home the kitten or cat is being offered and will only place the kitten or cat in a home they have approved. In addition, they will query you on your cat care knowledge and experience.

More is available at the linked site.

Meatball is offered for loving home in Oakland, CA

Domestic long hair, Torti mix
Female/spayed, 5 years
Meatball was named when she was a kitten for her butterball look which still fits her today. She would be ideal for a quiet adult home where she can be the only animal and get all the attention.

In the Chicago area;

A non-profit La Grange Park cat rescue shelter is coping with the theft of about $1,300 in cash from a recent fundraiser.

"That could be a week's worth of food, litter and some vet bills," said Bobbi Meyer, director of Catnap from the Heart, 1101 Beach Avenue in La Grange Park.
The shelter had completed a garage sale held in the yard outside of its offices on June 20 when an envelope with an estimated $1,300 in cash and some checks were taken from the office.
(snip)
The shelter has another garage sale planned for July 18, a used book sale for Aug. 15 and a dinner/dance in the fall.

The group can be contacted through catnapfromtheheart.org.

Homes needed for four abysinian cats that are used to each other and live in Martha's Vineyard.

Here is the description;
When you have a household full of 10 cats, a young child and your husband suddenly dies, sometimes you have to makes some difficult decisions. The owner of these 4 Abys is faced with exactly this situation and is being forced to give up 4 of the Abys. It is just too much to keep up with everything and her husband had been the caretaker of the cats. So we have 4 more Abys for adoption. They are all in good health, updated on their shots and they have their claws. They were all adopted into their current home and they are all boys. The owner's 5 year old child has interacted with them since he was born and they are used to and tolerant of children (except Red Ryder). Here are the particulars:
Thadeus is originally from Colorado and is about 10 years of age. He was rehomed recently to a neighbor, but the introduction was not careful and he came back having had trouble with the beagle and the other cat. He came back pretty upset and has been cautious and jumpy ever since. Whoever adopts him will need to work carefully with him as he doesn't handle change well.
We also thinks he should be the only pet. He is a beautiful, charming cat.

Red Ryder is a red Aby and is 14. His owner describes him as a "crazed super model". He was kept in a cage as a breeding cat until he was 7 when he was neutered and adopted to this family. He prefers the company of other cats to people. He is a sweet cat, but must come to you on his own terms. Whoever adopts him will not have to worry about trips to the dentist cause he has no teeth. He should be an easy cat to care for and really must go where there are other cats.

Little Babe is a Red from California. Babe was born in '94 and is in very good health. He is a normal Aby, nice temperament, very affectionate, loves to rub your face, purrs, comes when called. He likes other cats. He was allowed to go outside in a large enclosure.
Phebus is a 16 year old and is in his twilight years. He was having some balance problems and the owners had an MRI done and found something (which I didn't understand). With the vet's blessing they decided he didn't need any treatment as he was eating and purring and getting along fine even with being weak on one side. He is a very nice tempered cat -- super cuddly and affectionate. He purrs and face rubs -- a really nice cat. He has had most of his teeth pulled and has been a happy camper ever since. So if you have been waiting for that Aby that will fit in with other cats or small children, now is your chance.

These Abys are all in Martha's Vineyard, MA.

Friday Catblogging

This from cat parent Barndog;

It’s been awhile since my last letter, and some of you have asked for an update on how my life is going at (Barndog's) house. As you can see, I’m just getting better looking by the day. I’m going to call this place home. I’ve mastered all nooks and crannies, jumped on everything and explored all aspects.

I like my daily routine. I wake up Mom and Dad around 5am. They try to ignore me, but eventually one of them will get up. All I have to do is lay across the pillow and roll my body over their mouth and nose. That gets attention. I purr while I do it so they know I do it out of love.

After we’re up the morning, I like to play hard. If it makes noise, that’s my favorite thing. Mom tied a screw to some ribbon and tied it to the doorknob. You can hit that thing back and forth and make a loud noise. Dad usually wraps it around the doorknob so I can’t play with it though. It took a few weeks but Eve will plays with me in the morning. We like to make cat-thunder by chasing each other back and forth through the house. Freckles will sometimes play, but I get the feeling that she and Eve really don’t like each other.

I sleep all day, but that way I can play until late at night. I like to stay up until at least midnight. I like to climb things at night and make my Mom come and get me down. She’s started putting foil on things and that bothers me. I don’t like to climb it as much with foil on top. Ick!

Now that those other cats are willing to play with me, I’m working on getting ‘em to cuddle up to me too. Yesterday I found Freckles laying on the bed, and she let me get to first base by gently stroking the back of her head. When I tried to move my body up against her though, she pulled away like a snooty tease. Eve lets me get next to her on the ottoman, and I try that move with stroking her head, but she still won’t let me touch her more than once or twice. You can see in the picture, she makes me hang off the edge and more than once I’ve rolled off and fallen to the floor. How humilitating!

Last night was quite an experience. There was thunder and lightning for hours. I’ve never seen anything quite like that. We pulled together like a family. Mom sat at the computer, and I was in her lap. Freckles was sitting at her feet, and Eve was next to us in the window. My heart was racing, but I felt safe with everyone there. I didn’t even cry once.

Food is still important to me. I eat on a schedule and if they don’t feed me, I can cause quite a ruckus until I get their attention. Freckles eats food for senior citizens, but I’ll admit it, it’s the best food in the house. They’ve started to hide it on me – I have to confess that I’m addicted to it. The kitten food they give me is good, but there’s just something about her food that makes me crave it. I like the way Mom gives me canned food and now I won’t eat it unless she fixes it right. I have to have warm water stirred into it so that it’s warm and lickable. Yum.

My mom and dad went away for a few days on a vacation. I didn’t like it. Billi was here with me, and she’s pretty good to cuddle with, and she mixed my food up right, but she didn’t like me waking her up at 5am. It made her grouchy! When mom and dad got home, I just had to be held for days. I sure missed them.

My mom hurt her leg while she was gone, and the doctor made her work from home and it was good for me. I got to help her when she tried to use the laptop. She probably would have gotten more done without me, but the doctor told her to keep her foot up and to rest so I interfered as much as I could.

I guess I have to go back for more shots in another week. Mom says after this next round, she might let me go outside a little bit. She’s let me run around the deck but I’d like to explore a little further. I hate it when Eve and the dog go outside – I stand at the door and scratch and cry until they come home. I feel so left out. They still treat me like a baby! I’m close to five pounds already so they need to treat me like the little man I’ve become.

Love,

Frankie Blue Eyes

persian needs a home
I'm in central California and looking for a forever home for a Persian I've been fostering. She's a black and white doll-face, approx. 10-12 yrs old. She tested negative for diseases, has been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. She's a beauty and has a very sweet nature but has not assimilated with my cats and in her best interest should have a home where she is relaxed and happy. I'm a veterinary technician and can supply her health records and micro-chip info. However, I don't ship so I need to find a home for her within driving distance. I will transport. If interested, please contact me at hanfordpetsitter@yahoo.com.

Z

Gus

" target="_blank">Cornish Rex cats in Philly need home/rescue;

Breed: Cornish Rex
Names: Gus & Z
Age: 11½ year old
Neutered: Yes
Declawed: Front paws only

Gus and Z are a bonded pair of brothers. They are a playful and loving duo. Neither cat likes to be held but if your lap is empty, it won’t be for long. Human companionship is as necessary to them as the air they breath. I can often hear them knocking at my bedroom door and calling for me. Every person that enters our home is greeted by a meow and a touch of their paw in hopes of gaining some attention.

This breed has a very thin layer of fur so their bodies need to generate more heat to keep them warm. They are a couple of warmth junkies wgi search out the warmest places in the house like the heat vents, top of the cable box and under blankets which makes them a perfect pair of napping companions. They love nothing better to burrow under your blanket and curl up against you.

In spite of their years, Gus and Z are two very frisky felines, chasing each other throughout the house. Tussling and playing with each other before snuggling down for another nap.

Gus, the smaller of the two has a huge appetite. He will eat anything, anytime yet still retain his youthful figure. I feed them a half of a 4 oz. can of Iams cat food at breakfast and dinner. I found that this works best with their digestive system. Then I leave a bowl full of Iams dry food for them to snack on throughout the day. Z, or ZeeBee as we affectionately call him, is a picker eater. He also always waits for Gus to eat his share of wet food before finishing up. Gus always leaves half for Z to finish.

Gus’s coat is sparse. He was the runt of the litter and never has a great coat. He has lost all his teeth and Z has two left. ZeeBee is a tail sucker and a tummy kneader with a beautiful coat. They both have benign pustules on their belly. Unsightly but not a health problem. Their shots are up to date and I can supply veterinary reports at your request.

Gus and Z’s litter habits need to be retrained. This has been the way they show anxiety. The first incident occurred after we left them home while we took a long weekend vacation. We left them with plenty of food, water, and a clean litter box. What we failed to provide was human companionship. Since then I have someone visit them twice a day when we go away. Things were going well until recently. I am going through a divorce and not home nearly as much as I was. They’ve also picked up on the stress of our family situation plus my daughter’s absence every other weekend. For example, when my husband moved out he took all the family room furniture with him. Z came downstairs for breakfast, but first stepped into the empty family room. The poor thing sat himself down in the middle of the room and just kept turning his head left and right as if to say, “Where did all my favorite furniture go?” Since then they have resumed their inconsistent use of the litter box. Their need to be placed in a stable home where they will get lots of attention and affection from their humans, is a point I can’t stress enough.

My future is very uncertain and though we are heartbroken, I can no longer give Gus and Z the kind of home they need. My daughter is going off to college soon and I’ll be working full time. I don’t even know where I’ll be living six months from now. Please give my cats a good home. They will thank you with more love and affection than you’ll know what to do with.

Okay, this is cheating, it's the cats-eye nebula. Good luck in seeing one.

Annie struck me at once because of her resemblance to my own Jocabel. Some one had to give her up because of the economic meltdown. If you can't give her a home, you might consider helping out some of the shelters who are taking in these abandoned pets.

Description:
Annei is one of the many cats who have lost their home due to the current mortgage crisis. She is about 4 years old. A typical tortie she loves being petted but then wlll swat when she's had enough.
